Introducing: Kallax-Fi

Show this post The kallax doors are nowhere near airtight. They break easily. Mine have been dismantled multiple times, are all freestanding, full to the brim with records, not looking the slightest bit stressed. There's lots of info about them online. Put a tank on top of it, it wouldn't blink. Many users advocate gluing the dowels in to add even more strength, as mentioned by craig Show this post I also have a Kallax 4x2 and I broke a few dowels while putting the thing together. The units certainly don't need any extra reinforcement, not that i think the doors would add any. Books and misc. I have 3 or 4 of the same shelf and they are all absolutely sturdy and have been for a long while. I've always used kallax but they only work really well when secured back to the wall. Yes, I absolutely installed this the right way, per instructions in 4 up, 2 across configuration.. It did cross my mind. Any local hardware shop will provide you with corner or 'L' brackets which will easily do instead. Secure them against a wall using nice sturdy wall inserts with your wall mounts. I have several 5x5s and a few 2x4 squeezed in for those last precious inches of wall - I even have a 2x2 on top of a "standing" 2x4. Please enable Javascript to take full advantage of our site features. Sturdiness: Some of them are absolutely beyond loaded where not even a stamp would fit anymore. I feel like the doors would just hide your collection which is half the reason to have the nice shelves. Show this post living-in-the-past I agree with the speculation that you put it together incorrectly. Show this post I use the 5x5 and 4x2 units from Ikea, both the Kallax and the Expedit. It's pretty solid. Disassembling them and putting them back together again can significantly weaken them. Log In You must be logged in to post. If you feel like they are not sturdy then, I am sorry, but you assembled it incorrectly. Also, it's placed onto carpet which is not so worn at the edges. Show this post Make sure to secure the unit to the wall though. On average I pay about 50 for a 4X4 and maybe 70 for a 5X5. It makes them all line up smoothly which is awesome. I promise you, you wouldn't bring them down even if your life depended on it. Once this is done they're solid. Show this post living-in-the-past I'm unable to fix it to a wall with the supplied brackets because like many people in the UK I have skirting boards which mean that the furniture can't go flush against the wall. Assembly: Again, get the Expedits. It's not worth it and less sturdy. Pretty sure I could stand on one and it wouldn't blink an eye. I solved it by making my own dowels from a metal rod that was exactly the same size. I am going to find some wall brackets though just to secure it to the wall. Make sure that if the front has some gaps, you make it firm by placing some angled wood below in strategic places. And I feel like the dividers would take up precious space once it gets all filled up. You don't notice it unless you're looking closely at it, but the gap is large enough that a divider or LP can slip down and rest on the dowels instead of on the shelf. Is that a good solution for records? Or will that not be enough air circulation for them? I have been purchasing these since the dawn of ages. It needs to feel firm when you try to shake them unloaded.{/INSERTKEYS}{/PARAGRAPH} I sometimes stack records on top of them and I have even climbed on them for crying out loud. Save Thread Notify Me of Replies. They're inherently strong because of the dowel system, which is also where their vulnerability lies. If i climbed them they might fall over and kill me. I really want to keep at least my "best" stuff away from all kind of dust and potential accidents. When you do that it loses a lot of stability. Show this post I too have the 4x2 Kallax I was concerned about the sturdiness also so I glued all the wooden dowels and screws in and attatched a sheet of painted plywood to the back. The 2X4 is set up horizontally and has my technics setup on top. Show this post i've had expedit 2x2, 2x4, 4x4, 5x Show this post Hey, thanks for the reply. Show this post Klass. I went with the 2x4 model. Some cubicles get quite som sun tan :P maybe I should try those? It is a room divider, with one side anchored to a stud in the middle of a wall. These things are not sturdy at all. First impression: IKEA furniture isn't as sturdy as it used to be, but I sandwiched it between some other units so it shouldn't topple over right? I mean, not even close. Show this post My 5x5 Kallax is almost 2 years old and is working well enough. New users make a very common mistake of putting the long interior shelf vertically instead of horizontally. So i just refrain from climbing them ;. Are there attachables doors these days? I think this is what is causing some play. Show this post the hardware for doors or inserts may get in the way of LPs so I wouldn't bother with those. It is useful to put something a the back of each cube to prevent LPs sliding through. Get the Expedits, used, especially if you don't mind a couple scratches. Would it be a problem? You could do a whole back panel with some board and tack it on with brads or something, what I do is cut small pieces of plywood or whatnot about inches tall, the width of each opening, and glue them on inside flush with the back. Show this post Thanks for the replies, people. Animal over 2 years ago This post is hidden because you reported it for abuse. I only purchase the original Expedits on Craigslist. As for the little doors or dividers, I would avoid both of those. Show this post jancito edited over 2 years ago I have one 2x4, six 4x4 and three 5x5, all fully loaded with records. No problems after using them fully stacked for several years. I'm not worried, as long as it doesn't get any worse. Animal edited over 2 years ago So same opinion as yours i've known old expedite and remember they are more solid than kallax. But nevertheless for intense service or heavy weight as vinyls, i dont recommend kallax actually. So far, so good, but the sides, despite being almost an inch and a half thick, have bowed outward by a few millimeters. So now I loaded it up with almost all of my records talk about putting your eggs in one basket.. This causes the shelves that the records sit on to be slightly short, so you can see the dowels where the shelf meets the side. Show this post as long as you assembled correctly, it will be fine. In theory, they might add some sturdiness to the unit I did notice as well that IKEA sell these "divider" inserts they are actually brand new, weren't on the site when I ordered last week.. I don't mind the place looking like a showroom, im more concerned that the records wouldnt be getting enough air circulation if kept stored behind closed doors. Make sure the ground is even. Don't bother buying the Kallax new. I also picked up a few of those "door inserts" that no one seems to mention.. {PARAGRAPH}{INSERTKEYS}Started by living-in-the-past over 2 years ago , 35 replies. Like i said, im in the UK so not much chance of earthquakes here, nor do I have small children or animals to worry about climbing it. And after years, mine "move a little", but i admit i didnt fix 'em on wall. In hindsight i should have glued the dowels.. I figure the 4x2 is still movable without taking it apart. If you think about it, however records are stored there is rarely any space between them for air to circulate. Violent-Power over 2 years ago This post is hidden because you reported it for abuse.
